Sustainability Spotlight: Bacon

This month, City Go is proud to spotlight BACON as a leader in sustainable transportation.

BACON is a beloved local breakfast and brunch spot in Boise that serves five kinds of bacon in addition to an array of delicious entrees that always please. True to its name, BACON serves over 8 tons of bacon to hungry community members and visitors who come from all over Idaho and the world.

BACON employs over 30 servers, bartenders, and cooks who are a cohesive, collaborative team aimed at delivering high-quality service with each dining experience. BACON is family-owned and operated through the Benefit Corp. 'Berryhill & Company, Inc.', by its principles Chef John Berryhill, and son, Gibson Berryhill. BACON has also been featured on the Travel Channel, in Food & Wine Magazine, in ASY‐TV, and many more.

BACON is proud to support its employees and the local community through its non-profit foundation BACON for Hope. BACON for Hope is dedicated to serving the Hope House through needs-based projects, hands-on service, and events. BACON for Hope is a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to supporting the Hope House, and is humbled and honored to help children in need.

With the help of other businesses (Conger Management Group, The Land Group, BSN Sports, etc.), groups (Sunrise Rotary Club Boise, College of Idaho Men’s Basketball, etc.), and countless individuals, BACON for Hope has made a dramatic difference in the lives of children of failed adoptions. Alongside brunches, dinners, camps, service projects, and events, BACON for Hope has been able to deliver a new outdoor basketball court, renovate a track and field (completion set for October 2021), and begin a solar farm project that will eventually power the whole campus. All of these are ways, along with promoting sustainable transportation through City Go, that BACON is “bacon a difference!”

What does “sustainable transportation” mean to your business?

We seek to do things in ways that “build up, not break down.” We want sustainability in every aspect of our lives: our business, our homes, our relationships, as well as our transportation. Though we know that riding a bike or taking the bus isn’t going to instantly change the world, we do believe that big results require a continuous amount of small actions. So to us, “sustainable transportation” means making a lot of little positive choices about how we choose to get from one place to another.

What inspires and drives your organization’s work on sustainable transportation?

Whether the obstacle of getting to work is no car, not wanting to pay for parking, or having a commute too long to walk or bike, we want everyone on the Bacon team to have an opportunity to get to work safely, on time, and without draining their wallets. Our partnership with City Go provides the team options that allow us to achieve these goals, all the while being more sustainable.

In what ways does your organization promote sustainable transportation?

We try to practice what we preach. My son, Gibson, and I ride our bikes to work every day, along with many of our team members. Some members carpool, park once and walk, scoot, or skateboard into work.

We can share how important it is to seek sustainable solutions in all areas of our team’s lives as much as we want, but we run the risk of being unheard and hypocritical if we choose to arrive at work every day in a single-occupancy vehicle or larger gas-guzzling vehicle. Although, the future with electric vehicles and more may mean we eventually ditch the bikes!

What transportation modes or initiatives are most exciting for your organization?

We love the bus! For years, members of our team have used the bus as their main source of transportation. To be able to offer the bus service to our Bacon team for free as part of our City Go membership has been very special. We’ve been amazed at the hours and distances the routes cover now, which allows our team to get to work and back no matter where they live.

Why is your business’s participation in City Go important?

Our participation in City Go has been very helpful for our team and has helped us focus more on how we can be more thoughtful in seeking sustainable solutions in other areas of our business too. Again, it’s one of those “little things” we do that we believe influences the BIG things we hope for in our community and our relationships.
